Il progetto è nato da un lungo processo. Il fatto che siamo nati all’inizio degli anni ’90 ha giocato un ruolo importante: la nostra generazione è sempre stata consapevole dell’attuale crisi ecologica. Questa consapevolezza è stata parte integrante del modo in cui ci siamo costruiti.
Nel corso di questo progetto ci siamo posti molte domande su come la retorica ecologica, incorporata nelle nostre vite, in particolare attraverso gli avvisi della comunità scientifica, sia stata in grado di cambiare il modo in cui pensiamo il mondo.
L’ecologia pone domande profonde: si interroga circa il posto dell’essere umano nella natura. Per molti filosofi, tra cui Bruno Latour e Isabelle Stengers, tenere la natura fuori dalla cultura non ha più senso oggi. Siamo consapevoli della porosità e delle relazioni interdipendenti tra l’uomo e la natura, alla luce di un mondo in cui i destini dei due sono senza dubbio intrinseci.
Questa continuità tra l’uomo e la natura è stata formulata da tempo ed ha preso forma in una sostanza misteriosa, raffigurata in molti miti della creazione, il tessuto dell’universo, che ha assunto diversi nomi nel corso delle epoche – compreso quello di Etere – è una materia primordiale che permea e unifica tutto. L’Etere è originariamente una divinità greca, nata dalle tenebre e dalla notte e che ha generato la Terra. Spiriti più cauti lo chiamavano l’Essere o il Respiro. Sulla scia delle religioni monoteiste, la materia fu battezzata Sostanza di Dio. Per altri ancora, è la vibrazione dell’Om primordiale, una pulsazione che si diffonde in tutto l’universo.
In ogni caso, la sostanza onnipresente avrebbe un ruolo unificante. Non saremmo più un mero aggregato di atomi, nato da un incontro casuale di particelle nel vuoto, ma un “tutto” organizzato e forgiato dal respiro, da una massa matrice dalla quale deriverebbero tutti gli elementi della natura. Etere definisce l’immagine di un mondo auto-organizzato, di un cosmo.
Il nostro lavoro è alimentato tanto da questi miti fondatori quanto dagli studi scientifici più recenti, poiché una delle maggiori scoperte di questo secolo evoca curiosamente le proprietà dell’Etere. Questo è il bosone di Higgs, o particella di Dio, portato alla luce nel 2012. Questo campo, che ha sviluppato e riempito l’universo alla sua origine, è ciò che dà sostanza alla materia. La protagonista del film, Chiara Mariotti, è stata responsabile dell’esperienza presso il laboratorio del CERN.
Pensiamo che la nozione di etere possa risuonare oggi, al di là dell’attualità di questa scoperta scientifica. L’idea di un legame tra la terra, gli uomini e il cielo parla da sé, all’interno del contesto in cui viviamo. Nell’installazione Mass, abbiamo voluto evidenziare i cambiamenti causati dalla crisi ecologica, che si stanno verificando in modo più inconscio nel mondo contemporaneo. Abbiamo voluto dare una presenza anche a questa misteriosa sostanza, mettendoci alla ricerca di un punto invisibile poiché, secondo Eraclito: “La natura ama nascondersi”.
The project was born out of a long process. The fact that we were born in the early 1990s played a role. Our generation has always been aware of the current ecological crisis.it has been an integral part of the way we have built ourselves.
In doing this project, we asked ourselves a lot of questions about how the ecological rhetoric, embedded into our lives, particularly through the alerts of the scientific community, has been able to change the way we think about the world. Ecology raises profound questions.it interrogates the place of the human being in nature. For many philosophers, including Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stengers, keeping nature out of culture no longer makes sense today. We are aware of the porosity and interdependent relationships between humans and nature, in the light of a world where our destiny is undoubtedly intrinsic to it. This continuity between man and nature has long been formulated and has taken shape in a mysterious substance. Depicted in many creation myths, this fabric of the universe, which has put on several names through ages, including that of Ether, is a primordial matter that would permeate and unify everything.
Men have competed to give a name to this signal. The Ether is originally a Greek deity, born of Darkness and Night and which engendered the Earth. More cautious spirits called it the Being or the Breath. In the wake of the monotheistic religions, matter was baptized The Substance of God. For others still, it is the vibration of the primordial Om, a pulsation that spreads throughout the universe.
In any case, the ubiquitous substance would ensure a unifying role. In doing so, we would no longer be a mere aggregate of atoms, born of a chance encounter of particles in the void, but a whole organized and solidarized by a breath, by a matrix mass from which all the elements of nature would come from. Ether gives the image of a self organized world, of a cosmos.
Our work is nourished as much by these founding myths as by the most recent scientific studies, since one of the major discoveries of this century curiously evokes the properties of Ether. This is the Higgs Boson, or Particle of God and its associated field, which were brought to light in 2012. This field, which developed and filled the universe at its origin, is what gives substance to matter. The main protagonist of the film, Chiara Mariotti, was in charge of the experience at the CERN laboratory.
We think that the notion of ether can resonate today, beyond the topicality of this scientific discovery. The idea of a link between the earth, men and the sky speaks for itself in the context we live in. In the Mass installation, we wanted to highlight the shifts caused by the ecological crisis, which are taking place in a more unconscious way in the contemporary world. We also wanted to give a presence to this mysterious substance, putting us in search of an invisible point since, according to Heraclitus: “Nature likes to hide”.
